As part of the CESA Spotlight Program, we’re partnering with Customized Energy Solutions (CES) to bring our network an in-depth webinar exploring how the launch of CAISO’s Extended Day-Ahead Market (EDAM) in 2026 will reshape opportunities for battery storage and renewable energy projects. With advanced modeling and real-world case studies, this session will equip developers and energy professionals with the insights needed to navigate risk and maximize value in this evolving market.
Description: The Western power market is undergoing transformative change, presenting both opportunities and challenges for renewable and battery developers. CAISO’s Extended Day-Ahead Market (EDAM) is going live in 2026 and is set to redefine regional energy coordination, offering enhanced access to wholesale markets while introducing new operational complexities. The aim of this market is to optimize resource dispatch and transmission usage across the Western Interconnection, creating pathways to reduce system costs and curtailments. In this webinar, CES will analyze the market opportunities for renewable and battery developers, presenting key insights developed through our novel modeling analysis.
For developers, this new market opens doors to innovative offtake structures leveraging locational marginal pricing (LMPs) in day-ahead markets that have not previously been possible in regulated utility territories. From merchant energy participation to advanced tolling agreements and Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (VPPAs), projects can diversify revenue streams while navigating market risks. Battery storage, in particular, stands to benefit from energy arbitrage and multi-stack revenue opportunities, moving beyond traditional fixed-price contracts.
However, realizing these benefits requires advanced modeling and forecasting. CES uses PLEXOS to simulate the EDAM footprint, generating detailed zonal and nodal price forecasts across participating Balancing Area Authorities (BAAs). These forecasts are integrated into CES’s proprietary CoMETS tool, which optimizes the dispatch of standalone and hybrid storage assets to maximize market revenues. This presentation will highlight results from our analysis and a case study of a particular project revenue analysis within EDAM.
As EDAM evolves, understanding the mechanics and leveraging sophisticated analytics will be critical for developers aiming to capture long-term value and remain competitive in the rapidly changing Western grid. We hope to be able to share these insights with CESA members who are interested in EDAM but unsure of the potential with this brand new market.
