CESA Comments on PG&E Elkhorn Battery Plant
Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) has resumed operations at the Moss Landing Elkhorn Battery Energy Storage System, restoring 182.5 megawatts and 730 megawatt-hours of capacity to the grid just ahead of California's first summer heat wave. After several months of environmental remediation, equipment testing, and new safety measures, the facility is back online to support regional grid reliability.
The Elkhorn system uses a design with individually spaced containers that helps limit the spread of thermal events. PG&E also implemented new monitoring tools, upgraded enclosures, and enhanced emergency protocols to ensure safer operations moving forward.
"The technology and standards have changed considerably since the first big batteries," said Scott Murtishaw, Executive Director of the California Energy Storage Alliance (CESA). "Facilities coming online now are being constructed with newer technologies meeting newer standards. Risk of runaway incidents has decreased dramatically relative to the amount of storage being deployed."
