CPUC Adopts 5-0 Decision Authorizing 6 GW of Resource Procurement

The California Public Utilities Commission just adopted a 5-0 decision authorizing 6 GW of resource procurement over the next six years — an important step to support grid reliability in California.

CESA worked to ensure the decision was structured to fully recognize energy storage’s reliability contributions. https://docs.cpuc.ca.gov/PublishedDocs/Efile/G000/M598/K101/598101594.PDF

The final decision incorporates key improvements to the January 14 Proposed Decision, including removal of the 50 percent cap on energy storage procurement, and creates a clearer path for long-duration storage and paired resources to compete based on demonstrated reliability value.

As President Alice Reynolds noted, the procurement decision “maintains flexibility for LSEs (load serving entities).”

A strong outcome for storage and California’s clean energy transition.
