The next revision cycle for NFPA 855 is officially underway, and the initial public input period for the 2029 edition is open through June 3.

NFPA 855 is the primary U.S. fire and safety standard governing stationary energy storage systems (ESS), especially battery energy storage systems (BESS). It covers topics such as:

  • Fire detection and suppression
  • Thermal runaway mitigation
  • Explosion control and ventilation
  • Separation distances and enclosure design
  • Emergency response and firefighter safety
  • Residential and utility-scale ESS installations
  • Commissioning, operations, and decommissioning

NFPA 855 plays a major role in shaping permitting, siting, design, safety requirements, and deployment pathways for battery energy storage projects across the U.S.

CESA encourages energy storage stakeholders, including developers, utilities, manufacturers, integrators, fire safety professionals, and AHJs, to engage in the process and help inform the future of ESS safety standards.
