CESA Provides Industry Perspective on Energy Storage Safety in Chino

CESA Executive Director Scott Murtishaw was featured in a recent Chino Champion article examining battery energy storage ahead of the Chino City Council’s consideration of a proposed storage project.

Scott provided industry perspective on the important role energy storage plays in California’s electric grid, noting the state’s growing need for storage capacity and its role in reducing reliance on gas-fired peaker plants. He also addressed misconceptions connecting energy storage projects with data centers and discussed how modern battery storage facilities and safety standards differ significantly from the facility involved in the January 2025 Moss Landing fire.

“I want people to understand that the potential scale of energy storage fires in a modern facility are nothing like Moss Landing,” Scott told the Champion. “That was an anomaly, and we don’t build projects like that anymore.” Read the full article in the Chino Champion.
