Steering Committee

Steering Committee members represent the highest tier of CESA membership. Each organization at the Steering Committee level is expected to guide decision-making within CESA, designate a representative from the organization to attend committee meetings, and provide resources for lobbying efforts in both California and Washington, DC.

Founded in 2009, 8minutenergy Renewables is the nation's largest independent developer of solar PV projects. AES Energy Storage develops, owns and operates grid-scale advanced storage projects. We serve power markets, generators and utilities with 150 MW of battery based energy storage resources in operation and 1000 MW in development. Our industry leading projects are bringing the next generation of flexible capacity to the power grid through advanced energy storage technologies that are scalable, commercially viable and emission free.

AltaGas, a Canadian corporation, is a North American diversified energy infrastructure business with a focus on owning and operating assets to provide clean and affordable energy to its customers. In August 2016, AltaGas signed a 10-year agreement with Southern California Edison (SCE) to build, own, and operate a 20-MW energy storage system at its Pomona facility. This is among the largest battery storage projects in North America.

East Penn Manufacturing Company, a privately-held company founded in 1946, operates one of the largest single-site, lead-acid battery manufacturing facilities in the world. The company produces high quality batteries and battery accessories for the automotive, commercial, marine, industrial, stationary, and specialty markets. East Penn manufactures the Deka UltraBattery® at its state-of-the-art facility in Lyon Station, PA.

Ecoult delivers complete energy storage solutions and modules powered by the breakthrough Deka UltraBattery® technology – a hybrid lead-acid energy storage device containing both an Ultracapacitor and a battery in a common electrolyte. Ecoult’s solutions manage intermittencies, smooth power and shift energy in a safe, reliable and environmentally sound way – the energy storage of choice for grid ancillary services, wind and solar farms, remote microgrids, dual purpose and diesel microgrid efficiency applications. 

LG Chem, founded in 1947, is a worldwide leading manufacturer of Li-Ion and Li-Ion Polymer batteries. LG Chem has an established global footprint, including a strong U.S. presence, and its Li-Ion batteries have been selected by major manufacturers and OEMs worldwide for consumer electronics, electric vehicle, and utility grid storage applications.

LS Power, founded in 1990, is an independent power company with offices in New York, New Jersey, Missouri and California. LS Power is a developer, owner, operator and investor in power generation and electric transmission infrastructure throughout the United States. Since its inception, LS Power has developed, constructed, managed or acquired more than 28,000 MW of competitive power generation and 470 miles of transmission infrastructure, for which it has raised over $27 billion in debt and equity financing. Wellhead Electric, with its affiliates, develops, owns and operates nine power generation facilities.  WPower, Wellhead’s women-owned business affiliate, currently owns one of the operating projects and two to-be-built solar projects.  Over 400 MW from Wellhead-affiliated projects currently are providing California’s electrical system with flexible reliable sources of energy that support the grid and the transition to a cleaner energy future.  Wellhead is also developing solar and storage projects critical to achieving the cleaner energy grid.  Since starting business in 1982, Wellhead has developed over 20 generating projects.

General Members are critical to the growth of CESA. These members are less involved in the overall steering and decision-making duties of CESA, but recognize the need for strong advocacy in renewable energy storage management.

Amber Kinetics, Inc. was founded in anticipation of the enormous worldwide demand for competitively priced, safe, environmentally sustainable, multi-hour energy storage. Our mission is to accelerate global adoption of energy storage by commercializing our advanced, cost-disruptive flywheel technology to provide a lower cost and higher performing alternative to fossil fuel generation.

Bright Energy Storage Technologies is commercializing novel energy storage and generation technologies. Their technology offers attractive economics for meeting requirements of a wide range of retail and wholesale grid-connected applications across a broad power- and duration range.

BrightSource Energy designs, develops, and deploys solar thermal technology to produce high-value electricity and steam for power, petroleum, and industrial-process markets worldwide. Combining energy storage with concentrating solar thermal power transforms solar energy into a flexible, dispatchable resource. Deployed at utility scale, it enables power generators to deliver clean energy, reliably and cost-competitively.

Brookfield Renewable operates over 200 hydropower facilities and 11 wind farms, totaling approximately 6,000 megawatts of installed capacity. Its portfolio is diversified across 12 power markets in Canada, the United States and Brazil and generates enough electricity from renewable resources to power more than three million homes on average each year.

Con Edison Development develops, owns and operates renewable energy and energy infrastructure projects and currently has over 400 MW of projects operating in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania. The company is an unregulated subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc.

Customized Energy Solutions (CES) is committed to promoting economic development through the advancement of transparent, efficient, and nondiscriminatory wholesale and retail energy markets.  CES supports clients by delivering scalable hosted software platforms to provide end-to-end management and optimization of assets creating profitable participation in the national energy markets today and into the future.

Demand Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Enel Green Power North America, Inc., has developed a best-in-class Distributed Energy Network Optimization System (DEN.OSä) that maximizes the economic returns of behind-the-meter storage systems alone, or in combination with distributed generation (DG). The company provides a turnkey solution (hardware, software and services) that ties together modeling, design and simulation with installation and operational monitoring, control, and financial optimization, to deploy storage-plus-DG systems at speed and scale. The DEN.OS software platform was designed as a scalable end-to-end solution that delivers differentiated value across the entire project life cycle, able to support utility-side, behind-the-meter and microgrid projects.

Doosan GridTech delivers control system software and power system engineering services that help utilities integrate distributed energy resources into their grid.

Eagle Crest Energy is developing an advanced technology, 1300 MW closed-loop pumped storage project at a brownfield iron mine site in Southeastern California (Riverside County). The Eagle Mountain project is ideally located to support increased renewable development in Southern California.

EDF Renewable Energy is a leading U.S. independent power producer with more than 25 years of expertise in the renewable industry, covering all range of services from project development, management to operations and maintenance.  EDF Renewable Energy specializes in wind and solar photovoltaic with presence in other segments of the renewable energy market: biogas, biomass, hydro, marine energy and energy storage solutions.  The company develops, constructs, operates and manages renewable energy projects throughout the United States for its own accord as well as for third parties.  EDF Renewable Energy’s portfolio consists of 4 gigawatts of developed projects with 1.9 gigawatts of installed capacity. eMotorWerks provides valuable grid management services - such as demand response, frequency regulation, peak shaving, local load balancing, and many others - that help utilities and ISOs better manage the grid volatility and prepare for and fully leverage accelerating EV adoption. Low manufacturing and operating costs of our company's networked assets support high ROI and short payback periods on initial capital investments.

Energport is a group of vibrant, enthusiastic, and talented engineers with extensive experience in energy storage system design and development. Lockheed Martin provides safe, cost-effective, bankable, and intelligent energy storage systems for applications from behind-the-meter C&I to wholesale interconnected storage.  Our turn-key product offerings for the commercial energy storage sector utilize a range of chemistries to deliver least-cost, best-fit solutions to meet our customers’ energy storage needs.  Lockheed Martin is also developing a high-performance low-cost flow battery, based on a proprietary chemistry, that is tailored for long-duration energy storage applications.

Magnum CAES is a developer of a compressed air energy storage project at the Western Energy Hub. This project will be one of three CAES facilities in operation worldwide, and will store renewable generation that will produce reliable, clean, and dispatchable electricity. 

Mercedes-Benz Energy offers innovative energy storage solutions for homes, companies, and utilities to manage resources more efficiently and sustainably. Using durable lithium-ion batteries produced in Germany, Mercedes-Benz Energy storage systems can optimize solar consumption, reduce expensive peak electric loads, provide backup power, and offer a variety of grid services. NICE America Research, Inc. was established in 2016 as a subsidiary of the National Institute of Clean and Low-Carbon Energy (NICE), an R&D institute affiliated with the Shenhua Group. Located in the Silicon Valley, NICE America Research will promote the implementation of clean energy development strategy, including energy storage.

Qnovo is a venture-backed company developing next generation electronic management systems for lithium ion batteries. By augmenting battery chemistry with unique battery performance management software, Qnovo enhances consumer mobility with faster charging, increased daily runtime and longer battery lifespan. Recurrent Energy is one of North America’s largest solar project developers.
